  2. This post inspired me to find my copy of Piragu and read it at last. While I like the book, Vekkai remains my favorite book by the author. Piragu is more like a mirror into the lifestyle of the 'sakkiliya" community - I have no first hand experience to say whether the picture is accurate or not, but it is a great portrait. There is no story/plot in the conventional sense, though.

I wonder whether you have any thoughts/memories to share about Poomani in general, and Vekkai in particular. I would love to hear your recos on books that throw a light on a caste. Joe de Cruz's Aazhi soozh ulagu on the fishermen caste, Puttham Veedu on Nadars, Vanmam on the two Dalit sub-castes, several Venkatram stories on the Saurashtra community (my favorite is "Paitthiyakkara pillai"), La.Sa.Ra.s stories on the Thanjavur brahmins of 30s and 40s, etc. Pudhumaippitthan's stories on Thirunelveli Saivap Pillais, are things that jump to my mind. But mudaliyars? goundars? chettiyars? reddiyars? vanniyars?
